The Supreme Court of Ohio is seeking a summer Intern student to assist our Law Library. Under the supervision of the Library Director, the intern will work closely with the research librarians and director on existing projects related to metadata entry, library reorganization, and answering legal and legislative reference questions.

The intern will assist with the upload of content to the digital asset management system and the creation of item-level metadata and transcriptions for digital objects; assisting with planning and moving a collection of materials; research using a variety of legal sources. The intern may have the opportunity to assist with some program planning and library outreach initiatives.

What You'll Do:

The intern will assist the Supreme Court Law Library by:

  1. Processing metadata and adding transcriptions for a newly digitized collection
  2. Assisting with identifying additional materials for digitization
  3. Assisting with planning and moving collection materials
  4. Researching assigned topics
  5. Providing occasional reference work when assigned

      Learn about the Supreme Court of Ohio by:

        1. Observing oral arguments.
        2. Observing and assisting staff with a board or commission meeting.
        3. Meeting with Supreme Court Senior Leadership Team.

        Qualifications

        The student must be a current graduate student in a Library and/or Information Science program (MLS/MLIS) or public history/archives program at an accredited School of Library Science or Public History. The candidate should have strong organizational skills and be able to work within deadlines; be comfortable working both independently and with staff librarians. Excellent communication and computer skills are a must; experience with archives, creating indexes or cataloging objects is a plus.

        What we’re looking for:

        This internship is designed to be part-time (270 hours maximum) beginning after May 13, 2024, and ending before August 23, 2024. Applicants must have the ability to schedule most on-site hours in Columbus between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm weekdays (scheduling is flexible within these hours). If your university program offers credit for internships, we will try to tailor the internship to the length/hours desired.

        Pay

        This position pays $21 per hour.

        We are currently seeking a full-time Law Librarian for our downtown Cleveland office.

        Reporting to the Library Manager, the Law Librarian is responsible for maintaining the library’s collection of books, publications, documents, and other materials. The position assists with the use of Internet-based search tools specific to law and other resources as required. The Law Librarian furnishes information on library activities and assist attorneys, paralegals, and other professional staff to collect and organize legal resources.

        Job Duties Include:

          • Maintain the day to day operations of the law library at multiple locations 
          • Provide basic and advanced reference assistance in a wide range of areas of law, market research and more 
          • Conduct periodic reviews of new and existing electronic resources while moving toward improved services and research efficiencies (e.g.: Lexis/Nexis and Westlaw) 
          • Train lawyers and staff on the use of Internet-based legal research programs 
          • Update existing and create new instructional materials 
          • Manage library memberships, interlibrary loan services, online passwords and subscriptions, document delivery services, circulation, and routing of materials 
          • Maintain circulation records, check materials in and out of the library, and maintain library operations files 
          • Process invoices and communicate with vendors, and assist with planning the department budget 
          • Make recommendations to develop and/or expand the collection and improve library operations 
          • Work with other members of the Firm on system-wide projects, visits other firm libraries as needed 
        Requirements:

        The ideal candidate must possess a Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or equivalent degree with at least 3-5 years’ experience. Work within a law library and familiarity with legal databases is preferred.

        This position requires strong service orientation with the ability to research and analyze information. Candidates must possess excellent oral and written communication, as well as strong listening and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
